Why Gelcoat Fades — And How to Prevent It

Whether you have a boat or an RV, if it has gelcoat this will be a question that will come up.

The real answer is what can you do to keep it from fading and putting chalk on your handsGraphic of a hand pointing at an RV with the text "Why Gelcoat fades and how to prevent it" next to the hand.

What Causes Gelcoat to Fade?

Gelcoat is tough, but it’s not invincible. Over time, it loses its shine and becomes dull, chalky, or faded. This process is called oxidation, and it happens when the surface breaks down from exposure and lack of protection.

  1. UV Damage

The biggest culprit is the sun. UV rays break down the resin in gelcoat, causing it to dry out, fade, and become porous.

Hot, high‑UV areas like Arizona accelerate this dramatically.

  1. Environmental Contaminants

  • Road grime
  • Hard water
  • Salt
  • Dust and desert debris

These contaminants sit on the surface and slowly eat into the gelcoat if not removed regularly.

  1. Harsh or Incorrect Cleaners

Household soaps (like dish soap) strip wax and protective coatings.

Once the protection is gone, UV and heat attack the gelcoat directly.

  1. Lack of Regular Protection

Gelcoat needs a barrier between it and the environment.

Without wax, sealant, or ceramic coating, oxidation starts quickly and spreads fast.

How to Prevent Gelcoat Fading

✔ Use the Right Wash Products

Always use RV/boat‑safe soaps that won’t strip wax or sealants.

✔ Keep It Protected

✔ Park Smart

Shade, covered storage, or even a quality RV cover can dramatically slow oxidation.

✔ Dry After Washing

Hard water spots can etch into gelcoat and accelerate fading.

✔ Address Oxidation Early

Light oxidation can be corrected with polishing.

Once the surface becomes rough, porous, or chalky, it may require professional refinishing.

When It’s Too Late for Polishing

If the gelcoat:

  • Feels rough or gritty
  • Stays chalky even after polishing
  • Absorbs water or stains easily

…it has likely broken down past the point of correction. At that stage, refinishing or repainting is the only long‑term solution. If this is the case for your RV or boat give us a call we will be happy to get you a free estimate.
