Helpful Hint #1:
Storing Your RV

What To Do Before You Store Your RV

When you’re not out exploring in your RV, storing it properly—especially in extreme heat—is essential to protect your investment. Here’s a comprehensive guide to keeping your RV safe, clean, and road-ready between trips.

? Deep Clean Inside and Out

Before storing your RV:

  • Exterior: Wash and wax to remove dirt, salt, and grime. Waxing adds a protective layer against UV rays, rain, and other elements.
  • Interior: Remove all food and sanitize thoroughly to prevent attracting rodents and insects.

? Drain All Holding Tanks

Moisture left in tanks can lead to mold, mildew, and algae. Be sure to:

  • Drain and dry the grey, black, freshwater, and water heater tanks.

☀️ Shield Against Weather

Hot climates intensify UV exposure, which can fade paint, crack decals, and damage seals and upholstery.

Protect your RV with these tips:

  • Wash and wax the exterior (including the roof).
  • Use indoor or covered storage when possible.
  • Cover tires with UV-resistant covers.
  • Shield windows—especially the windshield—with reflective or blackout covers.
  • Clean and condition leather seats, dashboards, and other sun-sensitive surfaces.

? Keep Pests Out

Rodents and insects can cause serious damage if they get inside.

Prevent infestations by:

  • Cleaning food storage areas thoroughly.
  • Plugging sinks and drains; lowering toilet seats.
  • Closing all windows and retracting slides.
  • Sealing any openings underneath the RV.
  • Sprinkling insect-repellent powder around the perimeter.
  • Covering open vents with screens.

? Control Humidity

Moisture can lead to costly mold and mildew problems.

Moisture control tips:

  • Use climate-controlled storage if available.
  • If not, leave vents open and use a breathable RV cover.
  • Place moisture absorbers like Damprid throughout the interior.

⛽ Add Fuel Stabilizer

Fuel can degrade in as little as a month, causing engine or fuel pump issues.

  • Add a stabilizer like Sta-Bil to your RV’s fuel tank.
  • Treat your gas-powered generator as well.

? Shut Off the Propane

For safety and pest prevention:

  • Turn off the propane system. Some insects are attracted to the smell of propane gas.

? Maintain Battery Health

RV batteries slowly lose charge over time.

Options:

  • If you have power access, use a battery charger or tender.
  • If not, remove the battery and store it in a warm, dry place with a battery tender attached.

Check Your RV Sealants

It’s one of the most important steps. Your RV sealant is the best defense against water damage. If you see any cracked or missing sealant, make sure to replace/repair it. (for more information on this check out our article on Sealant Maintenance)

With these steps, your RV will stay protected, pest-free, and ready for your next adventure.
